When Fast Instagram Growth Feels Wrong: What 25K Comments on One Reel Taught Me

One viral reel brought 8K+ followers and 4K+ email subs—but was it worth it? Here’s what I learned about growth vs. alignment.

🚀 The Reel That Went Viral for 5 Months Straight

In December 2024, I hosted my third annual 12 Days of Reels Challenge—a content series I run every year inside my membership and often open up to the public. One of those 12 reels? It took off like wildfire.

Posted on December 12th, the reel titled “How to Make 100 Faceless Reels in Canva in Minutes” has:

  • Nearly 26,000 comments

  • Over 22,000 saves

  • Almost 5,000 shares

  • And brought in 8,500+ new Instagram followers

  • Plus, an 18.4% increase in email subscribers

Five months later, people are still commenting “prompt” to get the freebie I offered in the video.

Sounds amazing, right?

Well… yes and no.

Let’s break down what happened, what I learned, and what I’d recommend to you if you want to run a high-impact challenge that grows your audience without compromising your message.

🧨 The Hook: Why This Reel Went Viral

Here’s why I believe this reel worked so well:

  • Movement at the start: I walked into my office and sat down, which created an engaging visual right away.

  • Clear headline up front: “100 Faceless Reels in Canva in 2 Minutes” appeared within the first second.

  • Captions: Included auto-generated captions for accessibility and retention.

  • Saveable content: The reel included multiple steps that are hard to remember—perfect for saves.

  • Share-worthy hook: People wanted to tell others about this “Canva hack” because it sounds wild.

  • Prompt call-to-action: I told viewers to comment “prompt” if they were confused, and I’d send them a resource.

And it worked. Almost too well.

😬 The Internal Conflict: What Bothered Me About This Viral Moment

Let me be real with you. As this reel kept gaining traction, I had a little brand identity crisis.

Here’s why:

  • Faceless content goes against what I teach. I constantly preach showing your face, building trust, and creating genuine connection through your content.

  • It felt clickbait-y. Even though the Canva tip is real, the phrase “100 reels in 2 minutes” sounds like a content farm tactic.

  • Quality of followers: A big spike in followers doesn’t always mean a spike in the right followers. That’s been messing with my open rates and engagement metrics.

💭 Questions I Asked Myself:

  • Should I take the reel down?

  • Are these new followers even my people?

  • Is virality worth the long-term confusion it might cause in my messaging?

📈 The Stats: What This Reel Actually Delivered

Let’s break down the results:

Instagram Growth

  • +8,529 followers directly from this reel

  • Consistent growth for 5+ months after posting

  • Pinned to the top of my Reels tab (as of publishing)

Email List Growth

  • +4,000 subscribers in 6 weeks

  • 18.4% growth during the challenge period

  • Weekly growth average: typically 2%, so this was a massive spike

Community Engagement

  • DMs from new followers thanking me for saving them time

  • Comments still rolling in 5 months later asking for the prompt

  • Positive feedback from my membership community and Instagram followers

So yes—it worked. But there’s more to the story.

🧭 The Alignment Problem: When Growth Feels Off

If you’ve ever had a post blow up and thought, “This is great, but is this really me?”—you’re not alone.

Here's why this moment felt out of alignment for me:

  • I don’t teach fast, faceless content creation. I teach thoughtful content strategy, consistency, and confidence to show your face.

  • I don’t believe in quantity over quality. While batching and batching efficiently are amazing, making 100 reels you’ll never use doesn’t align with my philosophy.

This reel felt like it was attracting people who wanted a shortcut—not people ready to invest in the work I actually help with inside my programs.

And that’s why I lay awake at night wondering: Should I take it down?

🧪 The Challenge That Sparked It All: 12 Days of Reels

Every December, I host a 12 Days of Reels Challenge inside my membership, The Content Coven. In 2024, I opened it up to the public for the first time—and the results were undeniable.

Why I Think It Works:

  • It’s short-term and doable. (12 days > 30 days. Trust me.)

  • It helps position me as an expert in Canva + content creation.

  • It builds serious momentum and buzz—especially in a busy content month like December.

✅ Tip: Run a Time-Limited, Themed Challenge

You don’t have to call it “12 Days of Reels.” You could do:

  • 10 Days of Brand Clarity

  • 5 Days of Story Templates

  • 7 Days of Canva Quotes

What matters is that:

  1. It solves a real problem your audience has

  2. It positions you as the go-to expert

  3. It’s short enough that you actually want to finish it

💡 Takeaways for Solopreneurs: How to Go Viral Strategically

If you’re chasing viral content, here’s what I want you to remember:

Do:

✅ Share valuable, actionable tips

✅ Use movement + hooks early

✅ Include a simple comment CTA

✅ Offer a next step (opt-in or DM)

Don’t:

❌ Share random content just for likes

❌ Wait too long to say what your video is about

❌ Use misleading or vague copy

❌ Leave people hanging with no follow-up

And most importantly: Make sure it aligns with what you actually want to be known for.

🎯 Final Thoughts: Would I Post This Reel Again?

Honestly? I’m still torn.

It brought in a ton of new people. Some of them became real community members. Some became subscribers. A few might become clients.

But would I intentionally post a reel again that feels even slightly out of alignment with my message?

Probably not.

Here's What I’d Do Instead:

  • Keep running 12-day style challenges—but tweak them to reflect exactly who I serve and how I help.

  • Be intentional with CTAs: invite only people who are truly aligned.

  • Resist the temptation to “growth hack” if it doesn’t match my values.

Virality is fun—but alignment is everything.
