Why Imposter Syndrome Holds You Back

Imposter syndrome is one of the biggest struggles female solopreneurs face—no matter their experience level. That sneaky little voice tells you that you’re not good enough, not qualified enough, or not worthy of success. But here’s the truth: The world needs what you have to offer, and it’s time to stop holding yourself back.

In this post, I’ll share:

  • How imposter syndrome shows up in business

  • My personal experience overcoming self-doubt

  • Actionable mindset shifts to break free from imposter syndrome

  • How to confidently own your expertise and start showing up boldly in your business

What is Imposter Syndrome & Why Do Solopreneurs Struggle With It?

If you’ve ever thought:

  • “Who am I to do this?”

  • “I’m not qualified enough.”

  • “Why would anyone pay me for this?”

  • “There are so many others doing this already.”

…you’re not alone. Studies show that up to 82% of people experience imposter syndrome at some point in their careers, and it’s especially common among female entrepreneurs.

The problem? Self-doubt creeps in at every stage of business—whether you’re just starting or you’ve built a thriving brand. Even with a large following and successful programs, I still have moments of questioning myself. But I’ve learned that waiting to feel confident is a mistake. Confidence doesn’t come first—taking action is what builds confidence.

My Personal Story: The First Time I Faced Imposter Syndrome

When my husband and I started a CrossFit gym, he was the expert—not me. I had just had a baby and didn’t feel confident stepping into a coaching role. Despite passing my certification, I still thought, I have no business doing this.

Instead of staying stuck in self-doubt, I focused on what I did know: nutrition. I started coaching a few people for free to gain confidence. By the end of those 30 days, I realized: I knew more than them, and that was enough. That experience set the foundation for my future success, proving that expertise comes from doing, not just knowing.

The same imposter syndrome hit again when I launched my online business. But I remembered what I had learned: Just start. Take action. Your confidence will catch up.

The 10% Rule: Why You Are an Expert

One of the best lessons I’ve learned? You only need to know 10% more than the average person to be seen as an expert.

Think about it—if you’ve spent months (or years) learning your craft, you already know more than the people who need your help. They don’t need someone with 10 certifications or a PhD. They need someone who has been where they are and can help them take the next step.

💡 Action Step: Write down 3 things you know really well that could help someone else. This is proof that you already have valuable knowledge to share.

Mindset Shifts to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

1. Reframe Your Thoughts

Instead of saying: 🚫 “I’m not qualified.”
✅ Say: “I’m learning and growing, and that’s enough.”

Instead of saying: 🚫 “I don’t know everything.”
✅ Say: “I know enough to help someone who is a few steps behind me.”

2. Start Before You Feel Ready

Waiting for confidence = waiting forever. You will never feel fully ready, so just start. Whether that means launching your first offer, posting your first video, or raising your prices—take the leap. The confidence will follow.

💡 Action Step: Pick one thing you’ve been procrastinating on due to self-doubt and commit to doing it this week.

3. Track Your Wins

One of the best ways to boost confidence? Keep a “wins” folder. Every time a client sends a nice message or you get a great testimonial, screenshot it and save it. When imposter syndrome creeps in, go back and read through the proof that you are making an impact.

4. Surround Yourself With Support

Imposter syndrome thrives in isolation. That’s why joining a supportive community—like my Content Coven Membership—can be a game-changer. Having people to cheer you on, answer your questions, and remind you of your value makes all the difference.

Why Perfectionism is Holding You Back

Another major cause of imposter syndrome? Perfectionism.

I see this all the time with female entrepreneurs who:

  • Spend hours tweaking a Canva template but never post it

  • Keep delaying a launch because it’s “not ready yet”

  • Wait for the “perfect time” to start their business

Here’s the truth: There is no perfect time. The best time to start was yesterday. The second-best time? Right now.

💡 Action Step: Commit to posting something today—even if it feels imperfect.

Final Thoughts: You Are More Than Enough

Your success isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about trusting that you’ll figure it out as you go. Every expert was once a beginner. The only difference between them and you? They took action despite the self-doubt.

So, what’s one step you can take today to move forward?

Thank you Em, this is my first listen of your new podcast, though I've followed you for a while on IG. Your words of encouragement have made me realize that I don't have to be perfect to start, I just need to start. Thank you!

YES, Gina!!! That's what it's all about, putting one foot in front of the other and just starting -- do it messy, but do it. The more reps, the more confidence! Thank you for listening!!!
